Web 2.0 And Social Networking Applications
An Insight Into Social Networks
Modern day web is cool. For teens, it is a great tool and recreation space for Generation X; much is also happening for senior citizens and therefore the Internet is becoming increasingly user driven and is for people of all ages rather than it being only for tech-geeks.
What exactly is Web 2.0?
During a conference in 2004 there was a brainstorming session between O'Reilly and MediaLive International. They were discussing about development of future web applications. This conference paved the way for the origin of Web 2.0. They were trying to identify some common elements of popular applications and services as a model for future applications. Web 2.0 applications and services contain some of such common elements listed below:
New useful data is the main element, it allows other parties to maneuver and control that data, easily adaptable applications, lends communal experience, uses web as a platform free of user platform, primary focus is on participation more than publishing and relying on users to provide quality content.
Google Adsense, Wikipedia, etc. are good examples of applications and services that use Web 2.0.
Based on the principles of Web 2.0 applications (What Is Web 2.0 by Tim O'Reilly) Tim summarizes the core competencies of Web 2.0 companies as given below:
Services, not packaged software, with cost-effective scalability
Control over unique, hard-to-recreate data sources that get richer as more people use them
Trusting users as co-developers
Harnessing collective intelligence
Leveraging the long tail through customer self-service
Software above the level of a single device and
Lightweight user interface, development models, AND business models.

Social Networking Applications
Social networking services relating to the web are places or sites where a group of people begin an interactive service based on interests between users. Easy to use communication tools are used to broadcast those interests to others. They in turn invite their friends and colleagues to join and encourage them to invite people they know who share the same interests. Introductions are then made between these people who have been brought together from the various levels of the process.
Through common connections, these procedures connect businesses to other businesses, businesses to consumers and consumers to consumers. It also establishes a network of integrity. This leads to a great deal of purchasing influence among target customers.
MySpace.com a popular online community is a great example of social networking. Through your profile you could create a whole little world of people who share similar interests like you who would pool others with such same interests. Such sites are useful to the users and marketers.
Blogs could also be considered as a form of social networking application. A lot of interaction takes place with these platforms through comments and responses to blogs that are posted.
